How to Prevent Hair Tangles After Swimming
How to Prevent Hair Tangles After Swimming
Pool days and beach days can leave hair feeling rough or knotted. Movement, wind, friction and exposure to pool or salt water can all make strands harder to separate. A few simple steps before and after swimming may help.
Before swimming
- Gently remove existing knots so they do not tighten later.
- Choose a comfortable, loose braid or another low-tension style suited to the swimmer's hair.
- Consider a well-fitting swim cap if practical.
- Follow any care advice specific to dyed, chemically treated or textured hair.
After swimming
- Rinse hair thoroughly with fresh water to remove pool or salt residue.
- Wash or condition as needed for the hair type and swimming conditions.
- Separate hair into small sections.
- Use fingers first, then a suitable comb or brush from ends upward.
- Support hair above each knot rather than pulling at the scalp.
For kids who hate post-pool brushing
Give yourself time and start with the easiest sections. If a child is tired or uncomfortable, work in short breaks. Avoid tugging through wet knots. Our kids' detangling guide has a more detailed routine.
Can detangling spray help?
A suitable detangler can add slip during brushing. Hair Hero is an aloe-based spray intended for damp or dry hair; use according to label directions and review the lightly fragranced ingredients. It does not replace rinsing or cleansing after swimming. See Hair Hero.
